Extracellular polymeric substances （EPS） play an important role in biological wastewater treatment. Many characteristics of EPS significantly affect the performance of activated sludge. This paper analyzed the influences of EPS on biological systems： the role of EPS in granular sludge and biofilm for- mation process, the role in the removal of heavy metals and phosphorus, the role in the flocculation set- tling and dewatering of sludge, and the role in membrane fouling. The influences of EPS on all aspects of biological systems were comprehensively summarized .
