Noise sometimes can improve the performance of a signal-processing system when nonlinearity, weak signal and noise coexist. The counter-intuitive phenomenonis termed as stochastic resonance.Based on signal detection and estimation,the information-theoretic and biological background of stochastic resonance is introduced in the paper, and its development history, current and future challenges are reviewed in detail.
