Extant models of emotional intelligence mainly examine the functional mechanisms of emotional intelligence with non-relational data. We extend examination of emotional intelligence through a large- ly ignored perspective that focuses on the social interaction process and the relationships among actors. Drawing on the combination of social psychological and social network perspectives, we generated proposi- tions concerning the relations of individual emotional intelligence with job performance, sequentially mediated by intra-group trust perception and friendship network centrality. Data from 46 teams composed of 210 individuals were used to test our theoretical model. All subjects were undergraduates and postgraduates at a Chinese university who were required to participate and finish a team project in set time. Survey data were collected at two time points separated by 2 months. At Time 1, subjects completed measures of personality and emotional intelli- gence. Two months later, at Time 2, subjects responded to measures of intra-group trust perception and friendship network centrality, and group project teammates rated subjects' task performance and organi- zational citizenship behavior. Analyses of multisource and lagged data indicated that individual emotional intelligence was positively related to intra-group trust perception. The results also showed that intra-group trust perception mediated the relations of individual emotional in- telligence with the out-degree centrality of friendship networks. The results further indicated that the relationships of individual emotional intelligence with the in-degree centrality of friendship network were se- quentially mediated by intra-group trust perception and the out-degree centrality of friendship network. Finally, our findings demonstrated intra-group trust perception, and the out-degree and the in-degree cen- trality of friendship networks sequentially mediated the relationship of emotional intelligence with task performance, as well as the relation- ship of emo
