A new undecairon(Ⅲ)oxo-hydroxo aggregate [Fe11O6(OH)6(O2CCH3)15](C5H5N)6 has been synthesized by controlled hydrolytic polymerization in pyridine solution containing oxo-bridged trinuclear ferric salt, [Fe3O(O2CCH3)6(H2O)3]Cl, and tartaric acid. The eleven iron atoms defined a twisted pentacapped trigonal prism with each of the iron center being octahedral coordinated. The six pyridine molecules penetrated the sheath of 15 bidentate bridging acetic ligands to form hydrogen bonds to protons on the six μ3-hydroxo ligands. The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility behavior of the undecairon(Ⅲ) aggregate was consistent with a ground state spin ST=1/2 per aggregate and the expected antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the Fe (Ⅲ) ions.
