Six periods build- up area were obtained from remote sensing images in 1978,1987,1995,2000 and 2006,together with a 1：50030 topographic map of Chuzhou City in 1966. The results of the urban land expansion of Chuzhou showed that the build - up area increased 7.84 times from 1966 to 2006, and the speed of expansion represented quickly and then slower. The expansion direction was mainly south - east with the center of city moved to east for 1084m and south 1940m during the past 40 years. Tiffs paper indicated some characters of the urban land expansion of small and medium- size cities in Anhui Province.
