This empirical study is built on perceived- value theories and social identity theories to investigate the relationship between migrant workers' housing purchasing intention and their sense of belonging, and their age or generation differences. We have conduc- ted two surveys in several cities of Jiangxi Province, using migrant workers in these cities as our sample. Results based on factor analysis and muhiple regressions demonstrate that gaining social recognition is the most important in their perceived values of housing pur- chase. Meanwhile, the need to belong or become city residents has a significant impact on their purchasing intention. Such impact, however, varies across age groups, showing that the younger the age group, the higher need to belong to the city, consequently the stronger the intention to purchase housing in the city. This study sheds insights on understanding the identity confusion of migrant work- ers and provides strategic implications regarding how to reform housing policies to facilitate appropriate urbanization. It also provides important implications for government to set appropriate housing policies helping migrants workers to gain their social identity and enhance their belongingness.
