Bryophyte is a kind of widely spreading advanced plant with simple structure, and due to its special morphological and physiological characteristics and its sensitiveness to ecological environment changes, bryophyte is usually taken as an ideal biological indicator. We reviewed the advanced study on the functions of bryophyte in vegetation changes, atmospheric changes, and heavy metal pollution bio-monitoring. We also tried to make a discussion on the nutrient source of hryophyte,which has been a controversial issue for a long time. It was held that bryophytes show varied levels in their absorption of chemical elements owing to their own characteristics and the difference in the nature of chemical elements.
