This study explored the effects of acupuncture on blood pressure, E-selectin, iNOS and eNOS in the patients of essential hypertension (EH). 60 cases of EH were randomly divided into the acupuncture + medicine group with the acupuncture therapy and Felodipine + the medicine group treated with Felodipine, 30 cases in each group. The patients' blood pressure and the contents of E-selectin, iNOS and eNOS were determined before and after the treatment. After the treatment, the blood pressure declined in both two groups, but with significant differences (P〈 0.05). The acupuncture + medicine group was superior. The acupuncture + medicine group had a significantly lower content of E-selectin and iNOS and higher eNOS, while the medicine group had a significantly lower content of iNOS. Acupuncture may regulate blood pressure by improving the function of vascular endothelial cells and consequently regaining the normal level of E-selectin, iNOS and eNOS, which ultimately adjusts the blood pressure.
