With the commercial planting of genetically modified (GM) plants on a large scale, their potential impacts on some beneficial insects have become an important part of risk assessment of transgenic organisms. The flowers of many GM plants require bees for pollination, and some GM plants may be important food sources for bees. On one hand, when bees feed on the pollen of GM plants, they may contact toxic proteins directly, On another hand, the characteristics and ingredients of the nutrition in GM plants may be changed due to transfer of an exogenous gene, which may have some impacts on the behavior of bees. In this paper, the ecological risks of GM plants on bees and recent advances in this area are reviewed and some strategies of biosafety assessment are also proposed.
