2,4-bis(dodecylthiomethyl)-6-methyl phenol (DD) was synthesized with o-cresol, dimethylamine, formaldehyde and n-dodecanethiol. The structure of DD was identified by IH NMR. Stabilizing efficiency of DD on PVC was tested by way of thermal weightlessness and Haake polymerdrive and compared with that of conventional Ca-Zn soap and methyltin thermal stabilizer. Testing results showed that DD exhibited greater efficiency than either of these stabilizers. Thermal stability of DD on PVC with oxygen present was almost the same as with nitrogen present which was attributed mainly to DD' s capacity to trap macroalkylperoxy radicals, decompose hydroperoxides in PVC and displace halogen from the thermally labile structures (e.g. internal allylic and tertiary chloride) in PVC.
