Single nucleotide potymorphism (SNP) in microRNA or microRNA-binding sites can influence the risk of certain human diseases by either binding microRNA to messenger RNA (mRNA) or regulating the expression of its target genes. In this short review, we summarize the mechanism of microRNAs and describe the biogenesis of microRNAs. In addition, we discuss the potential effect of SNP within microRNA or microRNA-binding sites in the development of cancer.
