Car lightweight background is approaching and hot stamping method has become the main method of manufacturing auto parts. However, there is a big question about manufacture of the B-pillars, that is, how to create hot stamping parts of variable strength with the upper part of high strength and the lower part of high toughness. To achieve this, different heating or cooling methods and different materials or subsequent heat treatment steps are adopted. In this paper, the main development directions of variable strength hot stamping technology are described from four aspects: heating, cooling, material splicing and annealing, and some evaluations are made from this.
