In this study, we collected a modern Tridacna gigas specimen from Xisha Islands of South China Sea, analyzed the high resolution Sr/Ca ratios of its inner shell. It was found, for the first time, that the Sr/Ca of Tridacna gigas displays regular seasonal variations and is well correlated with the SST. Different calculations are discussed for calibrating Sr/Ca with sea surface temperature (SST). Calibrations Sr/Ca against instrumental SST yield the following equations: Sr/Ca (mmol mol-1) = 3. 595 - 0. 0487 ×SST ( ℃ ) ( using monthly data) and Sr/Ca ( mmol mol -1) = 3. 842 - 0. 0578×SST (℃) (using only extremes). We show that the method using only extremes is slightly more accurate and is also more reliable.
