In recent years, increasing studies have shown that neutrophils have phenotypic and functional plasticity. On one hand, neutrophils could exert anti-tumor activities through cytotoxicity and activation of innate and adaptive immune responses. On the other hand, tumor and its microenvironment could induce the conversion of neutrophil phenotype and function, leading to the promotion of tumorigenesis, tumor growth and metastasis, the stimulation of tumorangiogenesis, and the induction of immunosuppression. The clinical studies have shown that increased number of neutrophils in the blood and tumor tissues is associated with disease progression and poor prognosis of cancer patients. This paper summarizes the advances in the role, mechanism and clinical value of neutrophils in cancer.
