Hydrophilic PEG chains were introduced on HDPE film surfaces by the electrostatic self-assembly method via the electrostatic adsorption of PEG ( polyethylene glycol) diazo-resin polycations on HDPE film surfaces which were pretreated by the concentrated chromic acid solution to produce carboxyl anions. Then the self-assembly monolayers were stabilized by covalence bonds formed from the decomposition of diazonium groups under ultraviolet irradiation. The photochemical decomposition of the diazonium groups was evaluated by the UV-visible spectroscopy method with a kd value of 0. 021 4 s^-1. The improved stability of the self-assembly monolayers with UV irradiation was identified by a solvent etching experiment of DMF-ZnCl2-H2O. The hydrophobic surfaces of HDPE films are hence hydrophilically modified with the contact angle decreasing from 104° to 48° .
