Cell-penetrating peptides are relatively short domain of the peptides sequence (fewer than 30 amino acid residue ). They can cross cell membranes and deliver a large variety of biological cargoes, such as small particles, protein, peptides, and nucleic acids, and induce the biological effects of cargoes. The uptake mechanism of cell-penetrating peptides is currently a topic of heated discussion, which is not clear yet. This review briefly discusses 3 possible uptake mechanisms and the characteristics: direct penetration into the membrane, transloeation through formation of a transient structure, endocytosis-mediated entry.
