The Yumen Pass, a famous pass on the ancient Silk Road, witnessed several changes along with western strategic requirement of Central Plains imperial court and development of traffic between China and West.On the basis of the studies of predecessors, having looked over the relevant historical materials and made repeatedlly on-the-spot investigations, this paper proves that the earliest Yumenguan Pass was set up in 111 B.C. or a bit later in the Han Dynasty and located in the Shiguanxia Gorge in the City of Jiayugun, Gansu Province. In about 102-101 B.C., the Yumenguan Pass was moved to the northwest of Dunhuang. Along with the opening of the Yiwu Road from Guazhou to Yizhou, the Yumen Pass was then removed to Shuangtabu in County of Guazhou. Till the Five Dynasties and early Song Dynasty, the Yumenguan Pass, regarded as a natural military demarcation line of Guiyijun regime and Ganzhou Huihu regime, was relocated back to the Shiguanxia Gorge in the City of Jiayugun.
