The status of wild red deer （Cervus elaphus） populations in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was studied using a multi-level sampling method. The results show that red deer populations distribute only in the northern counties in Chifeng. The distribution areas could be divided into two of grade Ⅰ , four of grade Ⅱ and eight of grade Ⅲ. The habitat area matching with the red deer is 318 797 km2, in which an estimated 3508.67 ＋2250.27 red deer live; there is a growing tendency of the populations of wild red deer to be patchy in Chifeng.
