N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a disinfection byproduct in drinking water and wastewater treatment plants, has been identified as a suspected carcinogenic compound by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Based on an extensive literature review, the paper summarized the formation of NDMA, the sources of NDMA and its precursors, their removal in municipal wastewater treatment plants, and the methods for inhibiting the transformation of the precursors. The paper furthermore forecasted directions of future research in NDMA and its precursors and also presented the needs for more NDMA studies in China.
