This article briefly introduces the application and development of nitrogen doped carbon catalysts for the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction（ORR） in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell and summarizes research con clusions of nitrogen-doped carbon catalysts in recent years. The parameters which affect catalyst activity towards the ORR including nitrogen precursors, metal precursors, metal loadings, carbon precursors and thermal-treatment process are discussed in detail. Meanwhile, the current difficulties in research and future development of nitrogen doped catalysts for ORR are proposed.
