A bacterium capable of utilizing fenitrothion ( O, O-dimethyl-O-4-nitro-m-tolyl phosphorothioate) as a sole carbon source was isolated from fenitrothion-exposed soil. Its most suitable enzyme production conditions were : 30℃ , initial pH 7.0 and incubation time 30 h. The crude enzyme extracted from the strain showed the greatest activity was obtained at pH 7.5 and 30 ℃ , with its Michaelis-Mentn's constant (Km) and maximum degradation rate of 2.92 × 10^-4 mol/L and 2 422.79 nmol min^-1 mg^-1 , respectively.
