Netrin-1, a survival factor, plays a major role in the development of neuroganesis and anglogenesis. Recent studies have shown that Netrin-1 transduced through the activation of a6β4 integrin regulating cell migration and invasiveness, cell proliferation during islet formation. Netrin-1 is also involved in promoting angiogenesis like vascular endothelial growth factor, stimulating mitogenesis of vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cell lines. At the same time, Netrin-1 can activate islet neogenesis, modulate cell apoptosis and protect the pancreas from injury. Survival factor Netrin-1 has significant role in preserving islet mass and repairing pancreatic cells, which provides a novel avenue for prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
