Objective. To probe into the safety and efficacy of central venous catheter inserted via great saphenous vein (GSV) in neonates. Methods. 52 cases of newborns (study group) accepting central venous catheter inserted via great saphenous vein and 75 newborns (control group) accepting central venous catheter inserted via elbow vein were selected for a ret- rospective study, the to compare the success rate, the rate of nonplan extubation and occurrence of complications. Results. The rate of one place in observation group was higher than that of control group(P〈0.05);the incidence of infiltration and rate of non-plan extubation in observation group were lower than that in control group(P〈0.05). Conclusion. Inserting central catheter via the great saphenous vein is safe and effective which can be selected method for peripherally inserted central catheter in neonates
