Aurora-A kinase plays an important role in centrosome separation, maturation and bipolar spindle assembly during mitotic phase. Aurora-A is also involved in the regulation of the G2/M transition and checkpoint. Overexpression of Aurora-A leads to centrosome amplification, aneuploidy as well as oncogenic transformation in cells, and correlates with tumorigenesis which can be induced by Aurora-A degradation turnout-suppressor gene p53 and upregulation oncogene c-Myc.
