Objective To explore the profile and function of CD4^＋CD25^＋ regulatory T cells （Treg cells） in patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura （ITP）. Methods Treg cell numbers were analyzed by flow cytometric analysis in peripheral blood mononuclear cells collected from control donors and patients with ITP. Quantification of cell proliferation was assayed by an BrdU ELISA kit. Results The percentage of Treg cells was significantly decreased in ITP patients in active and non-remission state when compared to the patients in remission and to healthy subjects. The suppressive activity of Treg cells in ITP patients was also found to be impaired. Conclusion Decreased number and function of Treg cells may be one of mechanisms of immune regulation dysfunction in ITP.
