Objective:To measure accurate planer orientations of semicircular canals in skull base and to analyze their ages, sides and sex differences. Methods: CT serial images of 45 normal people ( 90 ears) were imported into Mimics software for image processing. Three - dimensional coordinate values of landmarks of the semicircular canals and key structures which were used to define a standard three - dimensional coordinate system based on the Frankfurt horizontal plane. And then, the standard plane equations were obtained by a self - developed calculation program, LabyCalculation, with the support of Matlab software. The spatial orientations of the semicircular canals and angles among the semicircular canals in this new coordinate system were calculat- ed. Finally, the data were analyzed statistically. Results:The results showed that semicircular canals' orienta- tions in skull base had certain differences in different sexes and age groups, yet without obvious differences be- tween both sides. The angles between ipsilateral semicircular canals among different age groups showed no sta- tistically significant difference, and it suggested that the orientations of ipsilateral three semicircular canals could change as a whole with age. Concinsions:Our research can provide some help for ear development study, vestibular function testing and treatment of vestibular dysfunction.
