The microstructural changes in a bulk Zr55 Al10 Ni5Cu30 metallic glass fractured by uniaxial compression at room temperature were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Free volume increases are observed within localized regions due to the concentration of plastic flow, suggesting that local free volume increasing dominates the deformation behavior of metallic glasses.
