Lanzhou is a valley-city that is in the middle age of industrialization and its social spatial structure shows a trend of diversification and complexity. An ecological analysis was made to research into the urban social spatial structure based on the sixth national census data at the sub-district (jiedao) level in Lanzhou collected in 2010. The analysis indicated that six factors have had a significant impact on Lanzhou City's social spatial structure, and the main factors are external population, state officials and professional workers, minority population, highly educated people, agricultural population and industrial workers. From the results mentioned above, a cluster analysis was made to divided the city into six type of social areas: 1) Areas of densely government officials and professional workers, located in the south side of the Yellow River, including the old downtown of Chengguan District, which is the center of the city, as well as the old downtown of Qilihe District. Xigu and Arming Districts serve as sub-centers; 2) Areas of densely floating population, located in east part of the southern side of Yellow River; 3) Areas of workers and poor people, located in periphery of downtowns; 4) The minority communities, located in the bordering places between Chengguan and Qilihe Districts; 5) Areas of densely highly educated people, located in limited sub-districts in the Chengguan, Qilihe and Anning District; 6) Areas of farming people~ located outside of built-up areas. The urban social spatial structure in 2010 mainly exhibited a mixed model of zonal multi-centered belts.
