The research progress of interaction between DNA and amphoteric surfactant is reviewed. Relevant studying methods of interaction-observering and complex-charactering, such as fluorescent microscopic technology, light scattering, phase diagram and turbidimetric titration are expatiated. Owing to the characteristic of amphoteric surfactant, in specific range of pH it could induce discrete conformations] transition of DNA from unfolded coil to compacted globule by electrostatic attraction. Interaction between DNA and amphoteric surfactant is controlled by pH and ion strength. The DNA-amphoteric surfactant complexes have potential application as gene vectors.
