Abstract： In America, apart from basic teaching and research functions, service-based learning has become the third core function of its higher education. Service-based learning, as a method of teaching and learning can assist students with learning and promote their growth. Also, the service-based learning plays an important role in cultivating the eligible citizens with knowledge, skill, analytic ability, cooperative spirit and a sense of social responsibility. Moreover, the service-based learning developed in American universities is thought to be possessed of referable value for the current Chinese higher education reform and able to inspire the work done by the Chinese universities, such as graduate employment, classroom teaching, ideological and political education, etc.
