Reactive oxygen species (ROS) caused oxidative stress plays an important role in the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis, and it is associated with the occurrence of ischemic cerebrovascular diseases. This article reviews the mechanism of action of nicotinmaide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase in atherosclerosis and ischemic cerebrovascular disease, and the neuroprotective effects of NADPH oxidase inhibitors.
