2% ethylhexyl nitrate (EHN) was added into diesel-butanol blends ( n-butanol of 40% volumetric ratio), referred to as B40 +EHN, and combustion and emissions characteristics were compared to those of pure diesel and diesel-butanol blend. Results show that by EHN addition ignition delay is shortened and max. in-cylinder pressure decreased. Combustion noise of B40+EHN maintain the same level as diesel. At high exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate, NOx emissions and NO2 proportion increase. Compared to diesel, soot emissions of B40+EHN decrease by 80%. EHN addition solves the trade-off between combustion noise and soot emissions for low cetane number oxygenated fuels used in compression ignition engine. EHN addition has similar effects on CO and THC emissions. At high EGR rate, CO, THC emissions and its CH4 proportion increase.
