Voyage of the Sable Venus and Other Poems, African American woman poet Robin Coste Lewis's debut poetry collection, won National Book Award for poetry in 2015. With the title derived from Thomas Stothard's etching painting, the poems named after various Western visual artworks, and the collection structured along the timeline of Western visual art, this book is closely related to visual art on multiple levels. Lewis places black women's racial identity, gender identity and cultural identity in the contexts of Westem visual artworks, visual art history and visual culture, thereby revealing vividly the generative mechanism, historical transformation and aesthetic meanings of the meta-image of stereotypical black women, the sable Venus of prehistory.
