A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is Joyce＇s first published novel as well as the first stream of consciousness. In the novel, it is not only Stephen＇s ideas and interests which change, but also his fundamental means of experiencing and structuring the world about him. I shall attempt to explore his gradual process of being an artist with respect to two parameters： language and growth, rather, I want to concentrate upon Joyce＇s consciousness as it develops and modifies its basic modes of perception.
