The site of Jiahu(9000~7500cal.a B.P.)is located in Wuyang Country, Henan Province. It is one of the earliest settlement sites in the upper catchment of the Huai River. A large number of stone tools were discovered during the previous excavation seasons, but there is no stone material distribution near the settlement. The resource and exploitation strategy of raw materials need to be investigated. In this paper,“Site Catchment Analysis” were used to analysis the stone artifacts resource catchment of the Jiahu site. 618 stone artifacts were selected for raw materials identification through macroscopic observation, and 28 rock thin-section samples were carried out for petrographical observation. The results show that the raw materials of these stone tools from Jiahu site can be divided into 13 types:conglomerate, sandstone, shale, carbonate rocks, diabase, gabbro, diorite, andesite, quartzite, amphibolite, schist, gneiss and slate. Among these raw materials, sedimentary rocks have the highest proportion in stone assemblages(up to 61.17%), followed by the metamorphic rocks(23.46%), while volcano rocks have the smallest proportion(15.37%). The geological data and field investigation indicate that in the range of 24km to 50km away from Jiahu, Pingdingshan area in the northwest and Wugang area in the south are the most potential sources for the stone raw materials. It is inferred that those raw materials could be transported from mountains in the two potential areas. Combined with hydrological and topographical conditions, Jiahu people tended to get stone raw materials in these two areas or in the riverbed from upper reaches of Sha River and Li River. According to previous studies on stone artifacts classification, we find different types of stone tools were made from certain types of raw materials. Most of the manos, metates and grinding tools were made from sandstone, while stone axes, adzes, and chisels are made from diabase or diorite, which are highly hard and relatively wear-resistant.
