Porphyry molybdenum deposits, the most important molybdenum resources in the world, are spatially, temporally and genetically associated with porphyritic intrusions. Based on a summarization of researches on porphyry molybdenum deposits in western Cordillera of North America and China, this paper deals with such aspects of porphyry molybdenum deposits as their classification, co-genetic igneous rocks, mineralization and alteration characteristics, with the emphasis placed on transportation and deposition of molybdenum, characteristics of ore-forming fluids, and sources of magmas and metals of these deposits.
