The adhesion and lubrication roles of graphite in semi-metallic friction materials together with the effects of varying contents of natural and man-made graphite on the friction coefficient (μ), friction stability (μ as a function of friction temperature), and volume wear have been investigated. As an adhesive, graphite increases μ in a certain range of friction temperatures and as alubricant, graphite significantly decreases wear by weakening the friction between the rough surfaces of both friction material and rotor. Based on the principles of fuzzy comprehensive evaluation, a new method to describe quantitatively the friction stability of friction materials was proposed and its validity was confirmed.
