“VL” and “V Yu/Zai ( 于 / 在 ) L” are two normal constructions with very close relationship. Although they are very different in frequency in different Chinese documentaries, they can co-appear in certain periods. The most visible sign of their syntactic distribution is that some verbs can be used in both of the two constructions. In this article, we take seven groups of words for examples. Based on a quantitative ? ndings of twelve documents from pre-Qin dynasty to Qing dynasty and seven historical records from east-Han dynasty to Qing dynasty, on one hand, we describe their syntactic distributions and evolution, on the other hand, we generalize the reasons that cause the changes.
