In the existence of triethyl amine ( Et3 N) as a catalytic, α-hydroxy phosphonates are prepared from aromatic aldehydes and diethyl phosphite by one-step successive reaction at room temperature without solvents. This method pro- vides several advantages such as high yield (86% ~ 99% ), simple work-up procedure, shorter reaction time, milder conditions and environ-mental friendliness, and show its widely applied value.
