In China’s cities, landscape construction has always been considered as a fundamental way to pursue the integration of nature and cities. From the discovery of the ＂mountain and river from external observation＂ in the beginning of foundation, to the rediscovery of the ＂mountain and river from internal observation＂, with construction of key buildings and areas all along, one city has formed its excellent ＂gene＂ of landscape during the long process of development. Through the review of landscape construction process in Xi’an, this paper summarizes Xi’an’s outstanding experience in inheriting the ＂gene＂ of landscape in the construction of modern city, analyzes the challenges that all cities face in the current process of rapid urban expansion, discusses the ways to inherit the ＂gene＂ of urban landscape in the future, and finally proposes new thoughts for how to practice the planning idea of ＂mountains in sight and waters in view＂.
