Students face many difficulties in the process of communication in English, which often results in breakdown, or even failure of communication. The reason for that is the lack of communicative competence although they posses English language knowledge. J. Thomas＇s ＂pragmatic failure＂ theory can be used to interpret these phenomena. Pragmalinguistic failures are the main reasons by Chinese students while communicating in English. By employing strategies for cross- cultural pragmatic failure in College English teaching, the communicative competence of students can be enhanced, and their communication in English will become more effective.
