HNK-1 glycan is a special material, which exists widely in human natural killer cell antigen and a number of adhesion molecules. It may be related with cell recognition, adhesion and migration. Moreover, it could promote several functions such as regulation of the growth and development of the nervous system, motor neurons regeneration of peripheral nervous system, as well as the regulation of neuronal synaptic plasticity. The structure, the tissue distribution and physiological function of HNK-1 glycan, especially its effects on nervous system and the application in medical field were introduced, to provide a reference for the development of the new drugs which have the analogous functions of HNK-1 glycan and can be used to treat degenerative neurological diseases.
