For further development of optical networks, more is required of optoelectronic devices. In this paper, we analyze high-speed optical transmission, optical Ethernet, and optical access networks and determine the requirements on diode lasers. We discuss optoelectronic devices in China, in particular, research on and applications of diode lasers.
