An experimental study was carried out to analyze the impacts of soil nitrogen heterogeneity on the growth of a clonal plant, Zoysia japonica. The total soil nitrogen supply in the habitats, its distribution and the interactions between the two factors all significantly influenced dry matter productions of Z. japonica clones. Z. japonica clonal production benefited from heterogeneous nitrogen distributions when the total soil nitrogen supplies in the habitats were relatively low. When the total soil nitrogen was relatively high, clonal production was substantially higher in homogeneous treatments. In heterogeneous habitats, the positions of fertile soil bands relative to the initial position of the Z. japonica ramets affected clonal production. When Z. japonica clones acquired abundant nitrogen from fertile soil bands earlier, their dry matter production was increased.
