There are always needs of anatomic structure recognition and accurate localization to extract useful information from medical images. Active shape model (ASM) is one of the fast developing statistical model algorithms in area of computer vision. It has shown considerably promising future in the field of image segmentation and interpretation. In this paper, The current status of active shape model (ASM) and its subsequent active appearance model (AAM) are described, the applications in medical image processing area are summarized and also further development of statistical models are discussed.
