Highly active anti-retrovirus therapy (HAART) has resulted in a substantial reduction in paediatric HIV-associated mortality and morbidity and mother-to-child transmission. However, it is inevitable that children with HIV infection will be exposed to HAART for an ever-increasing length of time throughout their lives, and the cumulative toxicities of HAART are becoming progressively apparent. This review is to summarize the most recent work and provide an overview to the clinical manifestations and pathogenesis of mitochondrial toxicity resulted from paediatric HAART.
