Combined external-beam proton induced X-ray emission(PIXE) with X-ray diffraction(XRD) and laser Raman spectroscopy analytical techniques,34 pieces of ear pendants dated to the Han Dynasties, which were unearthed from Henan,Sichuan and Guizhou provinces, were analyzed non-destructively.It shows that these ear pendants could be divided into three types-glass,bone and lapis lazuli.Among them, there are 31 pieces glass, two pieces bone and one lapis lazuli ear pendants. The glass ear pendants belong to PbO-BaO-SiO2,PbO-SiO2 and K2O-SiO2 glass systems respectively.Referring to the literatures,we discuss briefly the possible origin of these glass ear pendants, and the relative cultural and technical exchanges between different areas during the early time. The results reveal the value of combination of scientific and technical analysis with archaeological study in resolving relative archaeological questions.
