Nanoparticles embedded in (or supported on) matrix materials represent a class of novel nanostructured materials with many potential technological applications. Typical examples include embedded nanoparticle systems and nanoparticles supported on surfaces of carbon nanotubes. We show that strain fields play a crucial role in controlling the morphology of nanoparticles in these nanomaterials.
