The high threshold of formal housing sector promotes the development of informal housing sector. As an affordable housing type for people with low income, informal settlement has become important supplement to formal housing market. But because of its spontaneous residential pattern without planning, informal settlement has brought huge challenges to the urban management in developing countries. The article analyzes the main modes and measures adopted in informal settlement upgrading abroad, and summarizes the key problems and solutions. Finally, it can provide useful reference and inspiration for China＇s informal settlement upgrading and city governance.
