The parallel machine tool (PMT), a new kind of machine tool developed in 1990's, is a new generation machining equipment combined with the technology of machine tools, robots and modern NC. Compared with traditional machine tools, PMT has such specific properties as high stiffness weight ratio, high response rate, high adaptability to circumstance and high additional technology value, etc. Therefore, it has a very vast application field in industry. The history of PMT is reviewed and its development and advantage are also presented. The research status of PMT all over the world and their application field and future development current are analyzed.
